Who should be baptized?
People of all ages (including infants and children) can be baptized at Community UMC. Non-members are encouraged to seek membership as soon as possible after being baptized. The United Methodist Church also recognizes baptisms from other Christian denominations.
Infant and Child
Baptism, as a means of grace, signifies God’s initiative in the process of salvation. Rev. John Wesley preached “prevenient grace,” the grace that works in our lives before we are aware of it, bringing us to faith. The baptism of children and their inclusion in the church before they can respond with their own confirmation of faith is a vivid and compelling witness to prevenient grace.
Adult
If you have never been baptized and would like to be, Community UMC offers adult baptism. This can be done by sprinkling, pouring or immersion either in the sanctuary or at the seaside. We believe that baptism is an act of God - a covenant that God initiated, and therefore, do not re-baptize people. We, however, offer opportunities for people to reaffirm their baptismal vows, because God’s continuing forgiveness and God’s prevenient grace can prompt us to renew the commitment first made at our baptism.
When do baptisms occur?
The sacrament of baptism can occur during any of our worship services either in the sanctuary or at the ocean based on the preferred method chosen by the candidate or sponsors in the case of a child. Baptisms occur after consultation with the Pastor who will share the history, theology, meaning, and responsibilities of the baptized and their sponsors, as well as the connection between baptism and membership within the church.
How do I schedule a baptism?
To be baptized, or to have your child baptized, you must schedule meetings with the Pastor by calling the church office at (772) 461-2499. Once the preparatory consultations are complete, the Pastor will schedule the date, place, and time of the baptism. The United Methodist Church does not practice private baptisms. The church is a community which promises to support one another in our efforts to live our baptismal vows. Thus, all baptisms are public.
